ABOUT THIS WIKI

This is the Wiki site for the TamBiC project that took place in Tampere University, Department of Computer Science during fall 2009 - spring 2010. For more information about the courses, see TKOPA12 Project Work (6–12 ECTS) and TKOPS117 Software Project Management (6–12 ECTS).

PROJECT'S PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The purpose of the TamBiC project  was to develop the Tampere University Bilingual Corpus system.  A corpus is a collection of texts, and the TamBiC is a bilingual corpus contains excerts of texts which are either written originally in English (and are now accompanied with their Finnish translations) or in Finnish (in which case texts are now accompanied with their English translations). Currently, the corpus contains some 1.8 million words, both fiction and non-fiction.

The TamBiC system enables users to perform searches online in the corpus contents - i.e. study the texts to find examples and material on translation practices to/from English to/from Finnish. With the provided on-line search engine, the users are able to perform searches of words or phrases, search inside the current search results to narrow down the results, remove matches from search results and so on.

PRODUCT AND ENVIRONMENT

The Tambic system search engine provides a web-based application for online corpus studies.  The TamBiC Admin Tool provides the corpus administrators with means for easy management of the corpus contents - such as adding new texts, edition old texts (for fixing typos, for example) and deleting texts.
